The link below to the piece by Matt Ridley in which he reviews the new book by Robert Plomin on how our genes dramatically affect our lives makes for fascinating reading.
I have always been a supporter of nature over nurture and Ridley’s review of Plomin’s book certainly seems to confirm the strong influence that our genes have.
This is, as Ridley says, “…a hugely important book…”
He explains further; “…if children are to be enabled to fulfil their potential, then you cannot believe that they are the product of their upbringing or education….they have innate aptitudes that can overcome environmental disadvantages”.
Nothing, Plomin believes, “….is bleaker than environmental determinism“.
On the other side of the coin, Plomin states that so called “helicopter parents” would be better off enjoying their child rather than attempting to mould them into a shape that they are genetically incapable of achieving.
Further, because our genetic traits are caused by thousands of genes, each of minuscule effect, means it will be impossible difficult to create a “designer baby”.
What a slap in the face for all those social justice warrior types who believe they can manipulate people into behaving / believing in a particular way.
Ain’t that the good news!
